Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) has laid off the majority of the 34-person recruitment team that helps their startups find talent, Axios reports.
How I'm reading this:
1) Startups are staying leaner and don't need as much recruitment support. Maybe they used to hire 100 people and now are staying under 20 or 30 at those same revenue numbers. If you need fewer people, you don't need as much recruitment support.
2) Recruitment is not the highest leverage value add a VC brings in today. The VC business model is going through a shakeup, as many on here have shared. If adding headcount is less important, then recruitment is less needed. VCs want to put money toward the highest leverage things that grow their companies and win the best deals.
3) The founders of the startups have talent views that are harder to communicate to a generalist recruiter (and related, a16z said some of the recruiters were being moved to specialized investment groups). I think startups are hiring for a new type of weirdo that recruiters haven't adjusted to or don't know how to source as well, honestly. Job titles are blurring, generalists are becoming more powerful, and it's harder for recruiters to suss out an AI superuser in minutes the way an AI founder can.
I'll link to the employee team page in the comments. If you have a recruitment opening or you're an SMB needing some freelance recruitment support, this is a cracked set of folks from a top VC that can probably help.
