Last night was a special one celebrating the one and only Joe Castiglione in Norman!
It was one of those nights where you just feel fortunate to be in the room. Nearly 20 current Division I Athletic Directors, almost all of whom worked for Joe at some point in their careers, plus so many other leaders across collegiate athletics all came to honor Joe's 28 years leading OU.
His résumé speaks for itself as one of the greatest ADs of the modern college sports era: 26 national championships, the development of transformational facilities, and a program revitalized into the standard. Those things are all impressive - they truly are - but they weren’t the focus of the night.
For nearly four hours, colleagues and mentees told stories about how Joe loved them, challenged them, pushed them and developed them. What a gift it must be to reach the end of a career and see a room full of people whose lives you shaped.
It was a great reminder for me. When we're chasing success, whatever "championships" look like in our own roles, it's easy to forget that it's all about people. Relationships are what last.
Thank you, Joe, for that lesson. Proud to be a Sooner in that room! #BoomerSooner University of Oklahoma
