September in media and marketing: three stories and one gap.

1. Advertising moved inside AI answers. Amazon now sells ChatGPT ads, as Lauren Johnson at ADWEEK reported, and Jon Evans at System1 says advertisers committed to $1 billion annualised on them in under 200 days.

2. Retail media started selling itself. It held its first upfront, Mitchell Parton reported Kroger's retail media profit up 24%, and Andrew Lipsman made the case that grocery works like TV.

3. AI companies and publishers are setting the price before the courts do: 299 media deals against 107 lawsuits, per Axios Media Trends, shared by Sara Fischer.

The gap: of the 199 people in this count, 14 wrote about retail media, and almost all of it from outside the store.

I run a retail media hub at Fozzy Media, so I'm adding the view from inside.

The September edition of The Second Read, with the posts behind every point, is in the first comment.
