Finding the right audience and being relevant to them are two different problems.

Even in data-rich environments, 47–50% of ads on social media, streaming services and websites are still perceived as sometimes or frequently irrelevant, according to the 2025 Advertising Research Foundation (ARF) Privacy Study (2026 data coming out soon). That gap is where my latest piece for The ADVERTISING Club of New York newsletter starts.

Search, social, creators, retailers and AI now all sit between a brand and the person choosing, and they dont just provide access. They filter, rank, frame and interpret. A brand can be visible without being salient, salient without being trusted, and trusted without ever becoming a serious option.

The piece looks at what that means for discoverability, and for how we measure it.
