At this stage in Digital Shelf, no one debates the value of showing up with a winning hero image.
What's not so clear (excuse the pun) is how to execute at scale.
Take Furminator, for example: Petcare wildly over-indexes online, and I'd argue this product does at least 50% of its sales online, yet its hero image is not glance-readable .
Poor contrast buries it. "Undercoat" the variant is a contrast fail, making it hard to read.
Poor contrast buries pretty much everything other than the brand:
> FURminator: PASS
> UNDERCOAT: FAIL
> SHORT: FAIL
> HAIR: FAIL
> MEDIUM: FAIL
> DOG: FAIL
> M: FAIL
> de-SHEDDING: FAIL
That this particular Furminator is for short-haired dogs - well, again, poor contrast makes it impossible. Rather than get frustrated with Furminators hero image the online shopper will find the competitor with a clearer hero and add that to basket.
My advice to the Furminator brand team:
de-Shed your poor contrast colours so customers can actually read your pack.
Readability Drives Revenue.
Fix Readability Fails and watch the Fur Fly.
