❌ I spent an entire afternoon this week analyzing poop drops and butt cream. On camera. For work.
We are not okay. The marketing, though, is incredible.
Here's what you need to know about marketing these products on Amazon.
[SIDE NOTE - this is DAY 4 of posting gifs until Amazon adds background videos to A+ content.]
Ok back to it:
💩 Hemorrhoid cream, flushable wipes, foot powder, anything that goes anywhere near a bikini line: the shopper is already nervous before they type a single word into Amazon. They are picturing the box on their bathroom counter when a friend comes over.
💩 The product has to fix the shopper's embarrassment first, and the itching second.
💩 In our YouTube video, Inaya Shaikh and I leaned hard into humor as the answer.
So I went back to our database to see what shoppers actually voted for when the product is awkward AF. The data mostly agrees with us.
And there is one place it absolutely does not.
MY HOT TAKE: bathroom humor relaxes the shopper. Body-part humor exposes her.
→ A women's wipes brand opens their gallery with "The #1 Choice For Your #2." Inaya put it best: the second the brand says the awkward part out loud, your embarrassment deflates.
→ A vaginal suppository with a cheeky tagline took 2 of 30 first-choice votes. 19 of 30 ranked it last.
→ A second cheeky intimate-care brand, different poll: 2 of 30 again. 9 women volunteered a negative without being asked.
→ What won both times was the least clever thing on the screen. A box that lists what it does in 3 plain lines. 10 of 30 named that list as their reason.
If you sell wipes, odor drops, or foot powder, say the awkward thing first and have fun. If you sell anything that goes inside a woman's body or on a sensitive area, say what it does in the biggest type on the box, and keep the jokes for Instagram.
The full breakdown is on my Substack this week: 9 shopper polls, the type-size test, a pouch that went from 1 vote to 12 by adding 3 props, + a hemorrhoid cream run through our grader.
