The nervousness about hiring remote is almost never about the work.
It is about the feeling that someone three time zones away will quietly do less.
I asked a candidate we placed ten months ago what he would say to a brand that feels that way. He has worked both ways, office and remote.
"Every time I went to the office, I just freaked out about the amount of work that people do. They are there for eight hours, they work three, four."
Then he made the point I did not expect.
"Instead of 100 candidates, maybe you have 10. What if those 10 already have a job? What if you cannot match that person's salary? What if you had 500?"
That is the actual cost. Not risk. Choice.
Insisting on your own city does not protect you from a bad hire. It just means you pick from ten people instead of a market.
