Finding a product with demand is not the same as finding an Amazon opportunity.

Finding a product with demand is not the same as finding an Amazon opportunity.
This is one of the biggest distinctions I want sellers to understand when doing product research.
When we evaluate products we might develop ourselves, one of the first things I want to understand is who currently owns the market.
In this example, we were walking through Dick’s Sporting Goods looking at golf products and deciding whether we would pass or go based on the same logic we use as eight figure Amazon sellers.
I specifically started looking for nonbranded products.
Why?
Because seeing generic products successfully competing can tell you something very different than seeing a search dominated by established brands.
When we searched, we were seeing names like FootJoy, Callaway, and Vice.
The generic option we found was sponsored.
That means it had to pay for that placement.
That is useful information.
Amazon product research should go deeper than asking whether a category has demand.
You need to understand who is capturing that demand.
Which brands dominate the search results?
Are generic or newer brands ranking organically?
Which keywords are actually driving sales?
How difficult would it be to earn visibility?
Would you have to rely heavily on advertising just to get in front of the customer?
Those questions start telling you whether there is a realistic path into the market.
A large market can still be a bad opportunity if the competitive dynamics make acquiring meaningful visibility too expensive.
This is why I would rather spend time analyzing the market before spending money developing the product.
Data gives you the ability to make that decision before inventory is sitting in a warehouse.
