Amazon has blocked Meta's Muse AI assistant. Of course! Search result pages still seem to work, but any time it loads a product details page, Amazon blocks it with "Continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use, to which our customers have agreed."
Amazon has held one stance on agentic commerce since the beginning - go away. Amazon's arguments against Muse are the same as its lawsuit against Perplexity. "The problem, Amazon says, is that it never agreed to any of it. Meta didn’t tell Amazon that Muse would access its store, the agent doesn’t identify itself when it browses, and it appears to capture and store customer credentials, which the company says could create privacy and security risks."
Amazon is not alone fighting automation. There was the case of Resy blocking another personal AI assistant Instant and many more. I think all major services will block automated access (in fact, most have been blocking them for decades, including Amazon. The only difference here is that AI assistants use browsers which were less often blocked).
"Amazon is blocking me, care if I go to Walmart instead?" Muse didn't do this automatically, but after Amazon search failed, I asked it to switch to Walmart. It found everything there and got me to the checkout page. AI agents can go around blocking sites by finding alternative retailers and thus incentivize retailers to allow rather than block them.
