I had the BEST day at Scroll Forward 🄹

Pretty Little Marketer has been a community I’ve loved for years now. It’s seen me through quite a few versions of my working life, from my corporate roles to now being freelance. So I was very excited for this one.

I also really pushed myself out of my comfort zone and went completely alone, which I was definitely nervous about beforehand.

I gave myself a little challenge to speak to 5 new people while I was there… and I did it!!

I also somehow ended up bumping into a few people I already knew, which was very lovely šŸ’˜

Safe to say I’ll be forcing myself to do more things like this on my own because I genuinely had the best time!

I came away with SO many notes too, but a few things have really stuck with me.

George Sullivan spoke about giving more than you take, and holding your nerve when you’re changing your strategy. Something I definitely needed to hear.

Ray Saddiq spoke about how people don’t have one discovery journey anymore. We’re discovering brands in so many different places now, so being a brand that’s in demand means thinking about how you’re showing up across all of them.

And this really stuck with me:

ā€œSocial listening tells you who customers want you to think they are. Search tells you who they really are.ā€

I also loved hearing from Lucy Murray about the thinking behind Free Soul’s content and one question in particular:

Does this make our audience feel genuinely seen? Not just ā€œwill this get views?ā€ or ā€œwill this perform?ā€

Will someone see it and think, that is literally me?

Will they send it to their friends?

They spoke about wanting to be in the girls’ group chats and I LOVE that as a way of thinking about content.

Grace Andrews spoke about building a brand beyond the founder too. Bringing employees, customers and other recognisable people into the story, rather than expecting the founder to constantly be the main character.

And Chloe Perkins šŸ’˜ gave such an insightful talk about mental health in marketing, which genuinely brought tears to my eyes.

Lots to take away from the day, but it was also just really lovely being around so many people who get this weird little world of marketing and social.

Sophie Miller take my money for next year already please?!!! And THANK YOU for building such an incredible community.
