One of our biggest Amazon failures was a genuinely good product.

One of our biggest Amazon failures was a genuinely good product.

We lost more than $25,000 launching noise cancelling headphones.

And that failure changed how I approach product research.

We found the product after visiting the Canton Fair and an electronics show. The headphones themselves were good. We had them tested. We invested in market testing.

But none of that solved the real problem.

We were positioned around $80.

At the low end of the market, customers were willing to spend around $20 on inexpensive headphones.

At the higher end, they trusted established brands enough to spend significantly more.

We were sitting between those two groups without a clear reason for customers to take the chance on us.

The mistake was not that we developed a bad product.

The mistake was ordering the product before understanding exactly how we were going to generate sales.

That distinction has shaped the way I evaluate Amazon opportunities ever since.

After the failure, we did a postmortem.

We analyzed how existing sellers were generating sales.

We looked at the keywords driving demand.

Then we separated those keywords into searches we could realistically compete for and searches where we could not.

That gave us a much clearer picture of the actual demand available to us.

This is something I want every Amazon seller to understand.

Do not start with, “Can I make a better product?”

Start with, “Where are my sales going to come from?”

Then understand the demand, competition, positioning, and keywords before committing capital to inventory.

A great product without a realistic path to sales can become very expensive inventory.

That $25,000 loss taught us a lesson that still influences how we operate today.
