The shelf has moved.

The shelf has moved.

Most haven't noticed yet because 90% of packs are designed only for the physical shelf.

-----------------------------------

There is no longer a single shelf.

-----------------------------------

Every new shelf is a glance-readability test.

Less than 5% test their pack to see if it works across all 4 shelves.

The root problem is the workflow approval disconnect:

Brand teams review packaging on giant monitors at full resolution. They debate typography, colour, and layout for hours. The shopper reality is completely different:

Scrolling fast on a 6-inch mobile screen, tiny thumbnails, sponsored retail media, asking an AI assistant, or vertical scrolling in a social feed.

At Neem, we look at "The Four Shelves":

1. The Physical Shelf: Traditional in-store merchandising.

What must be true:

•Win the planogram with evidence.

•Secure high-visibility locations. ENDCAPS, Off-shelf displays.

•Optimise the pack for rapid shelf recognition

•Optimise critical text for glance-readability

2. The Digital Commerce Shelf: Mobile shopping apps & retail search

What must be true:

•Win the Retailer’s Search Algorithm

•Optimise retailer search discoverability.

•Build product titles, taxonomy, and keywords

•Create a mobile-ready hero image. Optimise text for glance-readability

•Get the fundamentals of product data right.

•Build a conversion-focused PDP.

•Use ratings, reviews & Q&A, FAQ

•Selectively invest in Retail Media to preserve share of voice.

3. The Emerging LLM Shelf: Rufus, Alexa, and AI commerce agents serving visual options.

What must be true:

•Write for questions, not keyword density.

•“What is this for?”, “Is it suitable for me?”,

•“What makes it different?”, “How much do I get?”

•State the product’s job clearly.

•Name the category, primary use case and buyer or occasion explicitly.

•Make key claims specific and verifiable.

•Complete every structured product attribute.

•Use the bullets as concise decision answers.

•Build a coherent evidence-rich PDP

•Fix your hero images so they are glance-readable.

4. The Social Shelf: Fast-scrolling video feeds

What must be true:

• Win both the TikTok Algorithm & fast-scrolling human’s eyeball

• Build Glance-Readable Titles with Creators for their videos

•Start with a sharp human insight.

•Build content around a real moment, frustration, ritual, aspiration or need state.

•Win the first three seconds.

•Use movement, provocative question, problem, surprising result.

•Show the product in use, not merely in a pack shot.

WHERE PEOPLE GET IT WRONG:

Colour contrast is a killer because it works completely differently on screens than on physical shelves. Pack design agencies missed the memo & do not test contrast for SCREENS.

When packaging creates visual friction, you lose the shopper.

At Neem, we built RHINO AI to ensure glance-readability across every shelf before packs hit the market. Win on ALL FOUR SHELVES. #LPW26 #LondonPackagingWeek #DiscoveryIsEverything
