2016: Nigel Farage says that if we Brexit other countries will also leave the EU

2026: Canada's Mark Carney accepts the Ursula von der Leyen's invite to explore becoming the first Associate Member of the European Union

My commentary:

Ten years ago, Farage predicted other countries would follow Britain out of the EU. They didn’t.

Britain is still the only country ever to have left the European Union.

Ukraine wants in. Moldova wants in. Montenegro wants in. Albania wants in.

And now Canada, separated from Europe by the Atlantic Ocean, wants a relationship that brings it closer.

After the referendum many politicians used Brexit as a way to get into office. Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak, even Keir Starmer, all wanted to make Brexit work despite knowing the damage it was causing the country. They couldn’t be honest about the impact it is having.

And its embarrassing to share this clip of Liz Truss from 2016 also pointing out, "People will be permanently poorer."

In a world consumed by Trump and Putin, is it any wonder that so many countries are trying to get closer to the European Union?

Perhaps after ten years, the question Britain should be asking is not why nobody followed us out.

The question is, when will political discourse in the UK be honest enough to acknowledge the mistake, and correct it by rejoining the EU?
