Two Amazon customers can have identical lifetime value and one is still worth no

Two Amazon customers can have identical lifetime value and one is still worth noticeably more. Seller Central data won't tell you which.

Mansour pulled Subscribe & Save data across his account and found reorder customers and S&S customers land at roughly the same LTV. Same revenue, different cost to produce it.

The S&S customer's next order is already scheduled. The discount gets booked as a promotion, where it looks like margin erosion. The reorder customer's next order has to be won again, sometimes with an ad click, and that spend gets booked as marketing, where it looks like growth. Same job, two different lines on the P&L. Put the 5-10 percent discount next to the ad cost per reorder and the comparison changes.

The new data also splits sales by delivery count. If your subscribers mostly drop off after the second delivery, adding more subscribers won't fix it. That is a product or cadence problem.

Two checks before pushing anyone into a subscription:

1. Your own coupons. Near-continuous 20 or 25 percent coupons make S&S the worse deal, and your subscribers eventually notice they are paying more than the deal shopper on the same page.

2. Who actually converts. Subscription wins convenience buyers. The shopper who tracks your deal cadence and stocks up is not trading that for 5 percent, and a discount big enough to move her costs more than the clicks do.

So run it per product: discount given up per subscriber order, against real ad cost per reorder, at your actual reorder rate. The opportunity is usually the repeat buyer at her second order, right after she came back and paid you for a click to prove she needs more. That conversion rarely has an owner.

One caveat: the LTV parity is Mansour's read of his account, not a law of the category. The cost gap holds either way.

If you pulled your numbers today, what does it cost you to get the next order out of a non-subscriber?
