I've been hesitant to share this part of my story publicly.
USA TODAY asked me to talk about something I have never said out loud on this page before.
My mom passed away four years ago at 62 from cancer, and Bobo Wears a Bow Tie exists because of her.
She had this gift.
She found something good in every single day, even the darkest ones, and she wanted that same belief passed down to me, my brother, and eventually my own kids.
That is the foundation of how I think about confidence in children now.
It is not about pushing them to perform.
It is about sitting with them for five minutes, asking what made them feel good that day, and actually listening.
That alone tells a child that their voice matters.
I also talk about something parents miss.
If your child is frequently frustrated before age five because people do not understand what they are trying to say, that is worth a closer look.
