My son turned one this weekend. And between the love and celebration, there was an existential dread that hung over me all weekend.
I have said it before and I will say it again: We are living in leaderless times. I am tired of saying it. But I will keep saying it because I love my son. I want better for my son than what we are offering him.
The men in power in this country, and yes, it *is* men, are building a sad and disappointing future. There are virtually no men in power: corporate power, political power, cultural power, that I can point to and say: I hope my son models him.
And NOTHING makes that more clear than the last week that has transpired around this AI whistleblower.
Our business leaders are failing our children. A more than 10% chance of my son not having a future is not acceptable to me. I do not know how this is acceptable to anyone with or without children. And please, please don't argue that the industry is asking for regulation. This is the equivalent of asking women stop wearing short skirts to stop abuse. Abusers are responsible for their behavior. AI companies should be responsible for their behavior.
Our political leaders are failing our children. The failure to pass federal regulation on AI while putting global peace at risk via a third world war is a stain so large on our history that I can't believe we are even discussing democrats and republicans. It's time to break the system.
Our court systems are failing our children. Two weeks ago, a U.S. Appeals Court decided that AI child sex abuse imagery was deemed legal. This leaves me speechless.
This isn't just an AI problem. It's a leadership problem. This rot is humanity's problem. It's not the computers. We are dooming ourselves.
So here's where I tell you what I am doing about it:
- I am tripling down on my community. My business community, my family community and my children's community. Change starts locally and you can change your community and how you show up for it and it shows up for you.
- I am not quitting my pursuit to put humans first and AI in their hands in a responsible way in my business. We will continue to lose deals because I refuse to build synthetic humans. And I continue to stand by that.
- I am refusing to shut up. It is so easy to be bullied in these conversations about AI. But my kids need more people to think harder, ask tougher questions and demand a better world for them.
- And I am making and consuming art. Because it's where the soul goes to soothe, to sort and to share. And it is a critical act of hope.
What else should we be doing to change our course?
