Amazon is closing 2 more warehouses on October 30. Here is why.
This one landed in seller inboxes this week: the AWD distribution centers in North East, Maryland and Dallas, Texas are shutting for good.
If you only read the headlines, it looks like Amazon is retreating. Florida lost two fulfillment centers this summer (494 layoffs in Port St. Lucie, about 616 in Homestead) and WARN filings put 2026 layoffs at 8,000 plus across ten states.
If you read the notice carefully, the story is in the second paragraph: they are closing two sites to open two in Fontana and Moreno Valley, California.
Amazon is not shrinking its network. I think they're restructuring for optimization. Older buildings get converted or dropped, and the replacements are automated, regional hubs sitting closer to the customers who order the most.
Important Notice:
For sellers, the headline is irrelevant and the transfer window is everything. Inventory at those two sites moves between September 7 and October 30, and during the move (4 to 5 business days) it cannot replenish FBA.
Amazon buried the deadline: create a replenishment order before September 4 if you replenish manually. That date has already passed. If you have units in either building and you have not checked your AWD Inventory Ledger, do it today.
My take: every "Amazon is closing warehouses" headline for the rest of 2026 will be for consolidation and optimization, not because they're running out of money. Let's face it, we pay them more money than most governments need to run their country.
