It's hard to believe it's been 25 years since the terrorist attacks in New York, Virginia/ Washington DC area and Pennsylvania. Starting at 8:46 in Lower Manhattan, when the first plane hit the WTC North Tower, life in this country would change, permanently.
I can't imagine the horrors faced by all flight passengers and those in each of the buildings attacked, and in NYC, destroyed. Alongside those, there were innumerable heroic acts performed by so many people that day.
Rest in peace to all 9/11 victims on this, and every, anniversary.
I remember leaving work to call my sister who was working in the heart of Washington, as it became clear the capitol would be one of the next targets, worrying that something terrible was about to happen a block or two away from her. I was fortunate to speak to her and reassured that some of the other expected attacks would not unfold there.
I hope people take time out today to read thoughts and posts of victims' families and friends.
The worst possible outcome and the biggest mistake to be made in the aftermath would be to assume it was only a "one-time" event that couldn't happen again. Whether it's common citizens, national security apparatus, or local law enforcement, everyone has to stay vigilant and not let any guards down. When in doubt, say something, whenever lives could be at risk.
