everyone told me my first hire should take things off my plate, so I hired someone to put more on it ✌️

for over five years, Pretty Little Marketer was a team of one, so when people found out I was hiring, everyone assumed the same thing… that I'd bring in an editor, a VA, a doer.

I hired a strategist instead.

here's why:

when you're a team of one, you're never short on tasks - you're short on thinking time. every hour goes into making the thing, posting the thing, replying to the thing. the strategy happens in stolen moments (usually at 11pm and usually half formed)

a doer makes you quicker, a strategist makes you better.

Katherine doesn't take tasks off my plate, she questions whether they should exist at all.

she sees the whoooole board - pushing back on the shiny, off-brand stuff and asking the questions I'm too close to the work to ask myself.

so if you're a team of one wondering where to start, don't just hire hands.

I really encourage you to *also* consider a brain that makes yours sharper. it's the fastest way to build something bigger than you can carry on your own.

and that's the goal.

for Pretty Little Marketer to be the best community-first media brand for marketers on the internet.

that takes more than one person doing more and it takes the right people thinking bigger.

tysm for all of your love this week guys, we are overwhelmed and so excited. big things coming !!!
