Amazon shipped an ad placement this year that you cannot bid on, target, or opt out of. I think it is the most honest preview we have of where advertising is going.

Sponsored Products prompts went generally available in the US on 25 March 2026. The prompt appears in shopping results and on product pages. When a shopper clicks it, an AI-generated answer assembles itself out of your listing copy, your reviews, your brand posts and the keywords sitting in your campaigns, sometimes on a product your campaign never targeted.

No bid. No targeting. No off switch. And now a cost per click.

Every conversation I have about AI in marketing is about output. Write the copy, generate the image, draft the report. Almost none of them are about this: AI removing the operator's controls and replacing them with inputs.

That is a much bigger shift than the generation tools, and it changes what the job is.

If the machine assembles the message, the work moves upstream. Your product copy is ad copy. Your review corpus is creative. Your keyword hygiene is brand safety. The things you cannot control directly, you control by controlling what they are built from.

The uncomfortable version: a lot of paid media skill was skill at operating an interface. That part is being automated, and reasonably well. What is not being automated is deciding what the machine should be reading, and noticing quickly when it reads it wrong.

I would put money on the operators who saw this early and moved upstream. I would worry about the ones still measuring their value in bid adjustments.
