Amazon already told you why customers return items.
And if you havent seen it, you can find it on the Voice of the Customer inside Seller Central, tracking CX Health, NCX rate, and feedback or return reasons for every ASIN with recent sales.
This dashboard exists thanks to the customer’s feedback, as well as the box where the customer explains the return (the one that says the reason why they are returning it). But when you give it a try, you find that what is actually sitting inside that dashboard is raw buyer language, collected at the exact moment a customer decided the product failed them.
Amazon runs that feedback through a summarization model and groups it into root causes, so a damaged item complaint gets broken into packaging failure, spoilage, or handling damage, each with its own frequency count. The NCX rate is simply negative experience orders divided by total orders, and the CX Health score is your NCX rate benchmarked against similar offers, so a poor rating means your offer specifically underperforms its category, not that something is broken in general.
This data also carries something copywriters pay for separately: the actual words and expectations customers had before they clicked Buy.
If the return reason says the color looked different in photos, that is intent language; if it says the size ran small, that is also intent language. And both belong in your bullet points and title before they belong in your customer service macros.
So what can you do with this? Pull the root cause breakdown for your worst-rated ASINs, cross-reference the recurring complaint language against your current Flat File copy, and rewrite the sections that created the mismatch. Then track whether the NCX rate moves over the following weeks, since the metric lags behind real-time changes.
