π© Amazon brand owners, here is what a single main image is worth.
We changed one image on a client's listing and ran it as a live Amazon experiment. 21 days, a sample of 1.1 million on each side, shoppers split randomly between the two versions.
The new image added $30,270 in sales. Amazon called it a 99% probability of being the better image.
Here is how we got there:
1. Ideate wide with AI before anyone has an opinion
β We generate dozens of directions in a single sitting
β The goal at this stage is range, not a favorite
β Nobody on the team is allowed to pick a winner yet
2. Narrow to concepts that make different arguments
β Cut anything that is a style preference dressed up as strategy
β Keep the ones saying something genuinely different to the shopper
3. Four rounds of consumer polls, not one
β Each round goes in front of 30 real Amazon shoppers (PickFu)
β We read the written reasons, not just the vote split
β Every round rewrites the designs for the next round
4. Only spend real traffic once the gap is wide
β A narrow poll win is not worth a live test
β We wait for a wide margin before it goes anywhere near the listing
β Then it goes into Manage Your Experiments to validate on real traffic
5. Read the split, not the total
β Sales from search rose 24.8%
β Everything that was not search rose 11.1%
β Three quarters of the gain landed in search
Amazon's report splits the sales two ways. "Sales from search" are the orders where the shopper found the listing by searching. The rest are everyone who got there another way: an ad that dropped them straight on the page, a "customers also viewed" carousel, a repeat buyer, someone with the link.
The main image is the only creative that shows up in the search results. Once somebody is on the product page they can see everything, the stack, the A+, the reviews.
So the main image only really gets a shot at the people arriving through search, and that is exactly where the money moved.
This is not a branding decision, it is the only asset you own that competes in the search results.
