OpenAI is proposing to remove access to its models in Cursor on November 12.

OpenAI, Cursor CEO, and Anthropic founder all weighed in on X with so much subtly, I had to go Nancy Drew mode and dissect each tweet.

My translation of each one 👇

OpenAI - they trust the Cursor team, they don’t trust SpaceX, it’s a “proposal” so maybe this public tweet is a way to gain leverage in the negotiation (note that it came from the company account on a Friday night)

Cursor - seems surprised about the OpenAI tweet, sounds like they want to fight it, goes out of their way to say OpenAI is a small percent of traffic, calls into question their neutrality (though I don’t think the labs call themselves neutral) (and note it came from the CEO, not the company account)

Anthropic - reaffirms the trust in Cursor and reminds us that it’s been years of trust, highlights they’re providing more of the most constrained carrot (compute), takes positive spin on the acquisition by SpaceX (note that it came from founder Tom who we don’t hear from often and not Anthropic account, and note that Cursor CEO reshared)

Do I think it’ll hold? It’s hard for me to see a world where OpenAI continues to provide model access to a Musk-led company. Maybe if the structure of SpaceX shifts to allow for it, but that’s a big shift.

Do I think Anthropic got a big PR boost? No, devs are focused on the loss of O, not the maintenance of partnership with A. They care about their own work.

What’s the theme here? TRUST. How long has the trust been there, who holds the relationship, what hurt it, how to keep it. At the end of the day, all of these companies are led by people.
