EN 301 549 was officially published today, and digital shelf accessibility now has an exact number: 2.4 mm.
Zero days of ambiguity left. If you are in digital commerce, Section 5.1.4 is the clause you need to open immediately.
The 2.4 mm physical text size requirement is now written directly into the standard. It sits on the first row of Table 5.1, and Note 3 explicitly states that this row applies directly to handheld mobile devices. For years, brand teams and design and creative agencies relied on desktop reviews and subjective assurances that their ecommerce secondary images and retail media banners were legible enough.
EAA Technical standards like EN 301 549 do not recognise fuzzy "we tried" arguments.
An image asset either meets the 2.4 mm physical measurement on a phone screen, or it fails.
Text contrast is either better than a 3:1 ratio WCAG 2.2 or it fails.
EN 301 549 is a number everyone will be talking about in Accessibility.
The new EN 301 549 V4.1.1 (2026-09) published standard is available directly from ETSI: https://lnkd.in/ev29kvY8
