A mobile shopper gives your hero image 300 milliseconds before swiping onwards.
In that third of a second, their brain has to decode the 4Ws: Brand, Format, Variant, and Size.
If any of those four elements are buried in physical pack clutter or low-contrast typography, the fixation breaks and the scroll wins. Brand teams spend six figures on formulation and primary packaging, then review digital assets on 32-inch desktop monitors. On a studio display, every small descriptor looks legible. On a 6-inch phone in a fast mobile feed, that critical variant text disappears into noise. We did extensive eye-tracking with Tobii and we noticed just how crazy quick the fixations are, not to mention the scrolling speeds.
Shoppers never pinch and zoom to inspect a pack thumbnail. You can't in a retailer's mobile app. So when visual friction hits with poor contrast and clarity, online shoppers do not stop to investigate. They swipe on by.
Scrolling is fast. Fixations are Fleeting. Your hero image is literally your anchor asset for your digital shelf and your product display page. Build it properly. Test it.
If you can't get "glance-read" in 300 milliseconds, your critical messages get lost.
