Provocative Truth #6: Our brains prefer images over text.
This is not a preference. MIT research from Mary Potter's lab showed the brain extracts the full meaning of an image in as little as 13 milliseconds. Thirteen. You don't "look" at an image and then "understand" it. Your brain processes the entire scene in parallel, as a whole, before conscious thought even kicks in.
Now compare that to reading text.
A single reading fixation lasts around 250 milliseconds and yields one, maybe two words. Reading is sequential, multi-stage symbolic decoding. Your brain has to convert shapes into letters, letters into words, words into meaning, one piece at a time. It is slow, effortful work.
This is the Picture Superiority Effect. Images produce dual coding, a visual representation AND a verbal one, simultaneously. Text only gives you one channel. That is why images are recalled faster and remembered longer than words alone.
Now join me in thinking about what that means on a mobile screen.
Your shopper is scrolling the digital shelf at 300 to 400 milliseconds per product tile. In that window, their brain has already processed your hero image as a complete scene. If your hero image is glance-readable, the brain rewards you. Recognition is instant. Cognitive friction is low. The shopper taps and adds to basket.
If your hero image is cluttered, low-contrast, or illegible at thumbnail size, the brain has to fall back on reading the product title. That means switching from fast parallel image processing to slow sequential text decoding. That is cognitive load. That is friction. And on mobile, friction means they scroll past you.

You have milliseconds. Your Hero image makes it EASY, or it FAILS.
