Provocative Truth #5: Your shoppers are not reading on mobile. Stop pretending they are.
Try this. Roll up a piece of paper into a tiny tube. Now hold it up to your eye and try to read a poster on the wall.
That is what reading long text on a phone screen feels like.
And there are three reasons your shoppers' brains refuse to do it.
First, their eyes are doing double the work. On a phone screen, lines of text are super short. Your eyes have to constantly jump back and forth to start a new line every few words, like a bouncy ball. It's exhausting. Like watching a tennis match while trying to read a novel.
Second, the screen is shining bright light directly into their face. A phone is emissive. It's a tiny flashlight pointed at your eyeballs. That's why people can read for hours on a Kindle but struggle after minutes on a phone. E-ink reflects light. Phones blast it.
Third, their brain knows what a phone is for. Quick texts. Short videos. Games. Scroll, tap, move on. Nobody picks up their phone to settle in for a long read about your product's ingredient list. The device itself has trained them to skim.
So what do shoppers actually do when they're buying on mobile?
They glance at the thumbnail image, and they decide. We proved this in an eye-tracking study with Tobii. Product titles get ignored. The purchase decision happens from the hero image in fast scroll. Fail on the hero fail on the whole PDP it's the gateway to the PDP.
That means if your hero image doesn't communicate Brand, Format, Variant, and Size at glance speed, you are invisible. Not "underperforming." INVISIBLE.
As Kristy Meinzer put it: "If you work on the digital shelf, you know hero images are having a MOMENT right now."
She's right. Because the brands paying attention have figured out that the hero image IS the ANCHOR for the product listing.
