I was on holiday last week and I worked every day.

I didn't need to work, but over the past year I've stopped treating work and life as two separate things that I need to keep apart.

For a long time I bought into the idea that balance meant a hard switch.. fully on or fully off and I had to protect the line between them.

The trouble with that is when I crossed the line it felt like I failed… and I failed often.

I don't think that's true anymore.

Balance isn't not working during your own time, it's building a life and a way of working where the two don't compete for the same time.

Now an hour of work on holiday doesn't cost me anything, because the rest of the day is still mine and I'm still present for my family.

Maybe that's not the type of balance people normally highlight, but it's honest and it works for me.
