Competitor targeting fails when your reason to switch is weak.

Competitor targeting fails when your reason to switch is weak.
Most brands skip that part.
They pick a competitor ASIN.
They launch product targeting.
They wait.
Then they blame the placement.
But the real question is:
Why would someone leave that product page and choose yours?
We reviewed a home goods account running competitor targeting across 38 ASINs.
The campaign had:
→ decent CTR
→ terrible CVR
→ high CPC
→ no clear pattern
The issue was not targeting.
It was the offer.
The ad showed a product that looked almost identical.
Same price.
Similar review count.
No obvious advantage.
That is not conquesting.
That is asking a shopper to do extra work for no reason.
We rebuilt around switch reasons:
→ More units per pack
→ Stronger guarantee
→ Better review rating
→ Cleaner ingredient list
→ Lower price-per-use
Then we targeted only ASINs where one of those advantages was obvious.
Spend dropped.
Conversion rate doubled.
The campaign got smaller and better.
Competitor targeting is not about attacking everyone.
It is about finding the exact pages where your product has a visible reason to win.
If the reason to switch is not obvious in three seconds, the campaign is not ready.
