Here are the three massive org chart changes that AI is causing ⬇️
(And if you’re a CHRO, pay extra attention!)
1. Teams are getting smaller. Work that used to take a full org now gets done by small (I’m talkin’ 2-8 people) that are AI-first, experimental, build happy + their agents. Plan for small-teams-plus-agents like Uber and Instagram are testing out, not headcount alone.
2. Roles are getting wider. When anyone can build by describing what they want to AI, jobs get defined by the outcome a person owns, not a narrow title. Rewrite job descriptions and ladders around workflows/outcomes instead of tasks/output.
3. Hierarchy is getting flatter, and middle management is at risk. Plan for more ownership per person, which means more trust per hire and more noise and risk held per person.
The AI conversations inside orgs are still centered around tech and tools. But the bigger change is cultural and structural, and an AI-first company is a completely different shape than an AI-last one. Execs have to redraw that chart, and CHROs are central to that process.
If you’re a CHRO, I have something that can help.
On Monday, August 3rd at 1pm ET, I'm hosting a small virtual roundtable with Jacqui Canney, ServiceNow's Chief People and AI Enablement Officer, on how to actually lead a workforce through this massive AI shift. It’s 60 minutes, free, and built for CHROs, Chief People Officers, and Heads of L&D.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
