AI agents are reading your catalog now.

AI agents are reading your catalog now.

I have been reading about the 2026 AI trends, and it's crazy how nearly everything traces back to one shift: AI and agentic commerce moving from discovery into checkout.

One number that stands out is Adobe's report that AI-driven traffic converted 42% more often than non-AI traffic in early 2026, a full reversal from a year earlier, when that same traffic converted at roughly half the rate.

The common read on this is that agentic commerce is a new channel you switch on, or a setting to chase inside a platform dashboard.

Here is what the system is actually doing.

When commerce moves from discovery into checkout, the same agent that finds your product is also the one selecting it and committing the purchase, and both of those steps run on one thing, the structured data in your catalog.

An agent does not interpret intent, it reads fields, mapping a shopper query to an ASIN using the attributes already sitting in your listing.

Discovery only needs your listing to surface. Checkout needs the product to resolve to one buyable unit with a valid offer, and that is a higher bar.

So a gap in that data does not just thin your discovery, it can leave an agent with no buyable unit to commit at checkout.

For example, a GTIN that fails to resolve can be pushed into a suppressed state, which is not purchasable. An orphaned variation lets the agent match the parent but never land on the one child it has to name to buy.

And no buy box means there is no default offer for an automated purchase to act on.

Complete inputs let an agent match you. The agent surfaces what your data says, and stops there.

So, before chasing any agentic feature, audit catalog completeness. Confirm your GTIN values resolve, fill the required flat file attributes, and clean up variation structures.

Most of these trends describe what platforms are building. The operator job sits one level down, inside the data those platforms read.
