I was staring at a client's ad dashboard, watching the cost-per-click (CPC) spike.
"๐ผ ๐๐๐๐ ๐ก๐ ๐๐๐ฅ ๐กโ๐๐ ๐๐๐โ๐ก ๐๐๐ค," I thought. I logged into the account, slashed the bids, changed the targeting, and went to bed feeling like a hero.
By Friday, performance hadn't just dipped - it completely cratered.
What went wrong? I didn't have a data problem. I had an impulse problem. I made changes based on emotion and a tiny sample size rather than a real strategy.
If you manage ad campaigns, you've probably felt that exact same itch to tweak, adjust, and "fix" things. But constantly tinkering is often the fastest way to kill your performance.
Before you make your next account change, pause and run through this ๐-๐๐ฎ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ฅ ๐๐ก๐๐๐ค๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ to see if you should actually click "Save":
1. Do I have at least 7 days of data?
Less than a week is just a rough draft, not a complete dataset. Weekends perform differently than weekdays. Give the algorithm time to breathe. If you don't have 7 days, ๐ฅ๐๐ญ ๐ข๐ญ ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ง.
2. Have I removed the last 48 hours?
Recent data is highly volatile due to attribution delays. If you are optimizing based on what happened yesterday, you are optimizing incomplete data. ๐ ๐ข๐ฅ๐ญ๐๐ซ ๐ข๐ญ ๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ.
3. Do I have enough clicks?
A $30 spend yielding 5 clicks isn't a dataset - it's a tiny sample. Aim for a substantial volume (ideally, at least $2\times$ your average clicks-per-sale) before drawing conclusions. A handful of clicks is just noise.
4. Is this a consistent trend, or just a one-day spike?
Look at the bigger picture. Is this a pattern forming over time, or a random, isolated spike on an otherwise smooth curve? Noise naturally corrects itself. Only real patterns deserve your action.
5. Do I know exactly why Iโm making this change?
This is the ultimate test. Can you clearly articulate how this adjustment moves you closer to a specific goal? If your honest answer is "because I feel like I should do something," stop immediately. If you can't tie it to a strategy, itโs reflexive, not strategic.
๐๐ซ๐จ ๐๐ข๐ฉ: if you cannot confidently answer ๐๐๐ to all five questions, the absolute best optimization is no optimization.
