Amazon is removing the last human touchpoint in shopping. Subscribe & Save just

Amazon is removing the last human touchpoint in shopping.

Subscribe & Save just got hit with a lawsuit. The core claim: prices went up without saying a thing, buyers were not adequately notified, and by the time they saw the email, the charge had already been processed.

The thing is that this is a customer rights issue, a transparency problem Amazon needs to fix with better notifications and clearer disclosures.

But the system read is different.

While Amazon is building a shopping experience, it is also building a pipeline in which the purchase decision occurs once, and the system executes it indefinitely, with price as the only adjustable variable in each cycle.

Subscribe & Save locks in the repeat purchase, but it doesn't lock the price, meanwhile Auto Buy (Amazon's new Alexa feature), allows the buyer to set a target price, and the system automatically places the order when your ASIN hits that number) locks in the first one.

So don't be surprised if you now see more Auto Buy.

Now, the lawsuit may or may not prompt a policy change, but it will almost certainly result in a redesigned notification layer, meaning Subscribe & Save flows will likely surface competitor pricing and price-change data more prominently before each shipment.

For sellers enrolled in Subscribe & Save, that is a different competitive surface than exists today, because a buyer who sees a lower price from another seller, clearly presented before their charge processes, has a real exit ramp.

Which means pricing discipline on Subscribe & Save ASINs and monitoring how your price compares to other sellers in the same subscription window becomes less optional when the platform itself will most likely going to show that comparison.

♻️ Repost if someone on your team manages a Subscribe & Save catalog without a retention pricing process in place.
