Save this infographic with the different types of Amazon Ads and their applications! 👇

For a long time, we were thrilled with our Amazon ad reports.

Our branded search campaigns showed fantastic ROAS.

It felt like we were doing everything right - protecting the brand from competitors and getting cheap sales.

But recently, we decided to run a test and do something a lot of people are terrified to do. We turned off our branded search ads completely for two weeks.

We expected overall sales to drop and competitors to steal some of our customers.

Here is what actually happened:

1) Our PPC sales dropped, of course. But our organic sales increased by the exact same amount. Total sales didn't change at all.

2) It turned out we had been paying Amazon for months for clicks from people who were already specifically searching for our product. They would have bought it anyway through organic search. We were cannibalizing our own organic traffic and paying for the illusion of a high ROAS.

3) Yes, competitors started showing up more often for our terms. But we saw that when a buyer types in a specific brand name, they very rarely click on a competitor's product.

We took the budget we were burning on "brand protection" and moved it to non-branded campaigns to acquire new customers. Over time, our overall revenue grew.

Branded campaigns have a purpose, but often they just make your reports look pretty.

Has anyone else tried turning off branded traffic to test real organic sales? What were your results?
