Retail's new center of gravity is ChatGPT.
OpenAI has partnered with Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Lowe's, Sephora, Shopify, Etsy, Instacart, Wayfair, The Home Depot, and Nordstrom, among others.
This collaboration means that all the catalog data coming from the retailers feeds the OpenAI database, making those products discoverable to 900 million weekly active users
Coverage of these partnerships has focused on which enterprise retailers secured integration agreements with OpenAI and what the commercial terms look like.
The structure is worth understanding, in that through the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), merchants push their product feeds directly to OpenAI.
Then ChatGPT uses that data to answer shopping queries with visual results, prices, specs, and reviews, and the purchase completes on the retailer's own website (OpenAI does not charge fees on purchases that originate in ChatGPT).
Merchants keep the checkout, the customer relationship, and the loyalty data.
Shopify tested and extended this to every store on its platform by activating agentic storefronts by default, which means access to this discovery surface is not limited to retailers with direct OpenAI agreements.
What the scale of these partnerships signals is a change in where purchase consideration happens.
Because ChatGPT is becoming a discovery layer sitting across the entire consideration process, and the brands already represented in it have a structural presence that others do not.
So what can you do with this?
➡️ Map where your products currently have a presence across the integrated platforms.
➡️ Identify where gaps exist.
➡️ The retailers and brands without a structured presence in this network are already missing consideration moments that are happening without them.
👍 If this reframed how you see the discovery landscape, give it a like.
