Reviewed a client's listing last week, parent ASIN was optimized, child variants were neglected
Eight child ASINs, every single one shared the same backend search terms as the parent
That's not multi-variant SEO, that's a copy-paste shortcut, and it's leaving rank coverage on the table for every variant they sell
Amazon SEO has 5 sequential phases and most brands stop at phase 1
Phase 0 is research, you pull the top 10 competitor ASINs in your category and build a Master Keyword List, this is the foundation, 72 hours of work that informs every other phase
Phase 1 is indexing, you take that MKL and place it into your backend, title, bullets, and alt text, then you let it sit 30 days while Amazon catches up and indexes you for the keywords
Phase 2 is optimization, you pull sales performance data and refine the backend terms, you cut the keywords that didn't drive conversions and you double down on the ones that did
Phase 3 is the strike zone, you look at your full parent listing keyword pool and target the keywords ranked 20 to 50 because those are one push away from page 1
Phase 4 is advanced and almost no one does it, you optimize search terms per child ASIN so each variant carries its own backend strategy instead of inheriting the parent's
Why phase 4 matters
Each child variant has its own keyword profile, the size, the color, the configuration, the bundle, those all attract slightly different search behavior
If your blue tumbler is indexed for the same 250 characters as your black tumbler, you're missing color-specific search volume on both
If your 40-ounce variant has the same backend as your 20-ounce, you're missing capacity-specific shoppers
Variant-level keyword optimization is where mature listings unlock rank coverage you can't get any other way
Run the phases in order, don't skip ahead
➝ Phase 0 builds the keyword database
➝ Phase 1 indexes you for those terms
➝ Phase 2 refines based on what's actually converting
➝ Phase 3 pushes underperforming keywords toward page 1
➝ Phase 4 expands coverage at the variant level
Skipping a phase breaks every phase after it
If your indexing is bad, your optimization data is bad, your strike zone targeting is bad, your variant strategy is bad
Amazon SEO compounds when you run it in sequence
It collapses when you don't
