Most sellers troubleshoot the wrong thing when the Buy Box disappears.

Sellers managing brands across Vendor Central and Seller Central at the same time are running into catalog conflicts that neither platform flags clearly, the PDP looks good, the accounts look healthy, and both dashboards show nothing wrong.

The assumption in most cases is that a pricing issue is causing the Buy Box to disappear, so teams adjust prices, check the competition, review eligibility settings, and when nothing changes, they open a support case expecting a fast resolution.

The actual problem in this case we worked with was sitting below what any dashboard was designed to show, a child ASIN became unbuyable with no suppression notice, no policy flag, and no account health alert, because a required attribute contribution had been rejected at the backend without generating any visible signal.

At the same time, the variation family could not be restructured because the parent ASIN was created through the brand's Vendor Central account (Amazon's first-party supplier platform), and a parent with that ownership record cannot be dissolved or rebuilt from a Seller Central account, regardless of Brand Registry authorization, the authority to submit a change and the authority to have the system accept that change are two different things.

This week's OSS Lab case covers both problems: how we traced the catalog contribution failure that was blocking the Buy Box on a supplement listing, and how the variation restructure required reaching a team with authority over the Vendor Central parent records before any flat file submission could move the structure.

The full case, including the diagnostic sequence and what was corrected at each layer.

♻️ Repost it to someone managing variation families on Amazon, this system distinction comes up more often than most operators expect before they hit it.
