“Walmart Wild West” vs GS1 mobile-readable hero image showdown.
I tested 6 Walmart hero images with long strips
against 6 GS1-compliant mobile-readable heroes.
Here's what actually converts.
============================
Spoiler: It's not the strips.
============================
Long vertical strips are a sticky plaster. A cheap, low-effort "solution" to making your pack readable on mobile.
Except they don't work.
The research is clear:
→ Horizontal text is read 81% faster than vertical strips
→ Lowercase is 20% faster to read than ALL CAPS
→ Critical on-pack text needs to BREATHE - not get squeezed into a sidebar
At Neem, we've proven Readability drives Revenue.
RHINO AI uses visual science from The University of Cambridge to measure what's truly "mobile-readable." Every hero we test must pass both the Cambridge Visual Clarity test AND the APCA Color Contrast test.
The results?
✅ GS1-compliant, glance-readable heroes: 5%-25% conversion uplift
We've proven this in numerous AB tests and rolled out true “glance-readable” mobile-readable heroes across the Heineken portfolio.
❌ Walmart long strips: No impact. Just visual noise.
Why do brands keep doing it? Why don't they declutter their heroes?
Why do they “bolt on” last-minute ugly vertical strips instead of resizing what matters?
Why do they still use ALL CAPS when it's proven to slow reading speed?
Here are my observations on what's happened:
It's easier to add than to simplify.
It's faster to template than to think.
It’s “sexier” to test for attention rather than readability.
It’s easier to just "eyeball it" than test for Contrast and Clarity.
And nobody's testing whether it actually works for the online shopper.
Whether it reduces cognitive load, reading speed and COMPREHENSION.
Until now.
RHINO AI from Neem has made it easy to test your heroes instantly.
If you're selling on Walmart and think long strips are helping you...
Test them. Prove it.
Or DM me and we'll test them for you with RHINO AI.
Because Walmart as a retailer platform may accept it.
But real conversion driven by real glance-readability is what matters.
