AI is deciding when your customer buys.
Amazon launched a feature called Auto Buy, and the e-commerce transaction layer is behaving differently than it did six months ago.
Buyers set a target price on any ASIN, and the system executes the purchase automatically when the listing hits that number, no return visit, no second decision point from the shopper.
The common read is that this is a convenience tool for buyers who want a better deal, a passive background feature that helps undecided shoppers.
But I think that Amazon is also doing something more structural.
Because every Auto Buy rule on your listing is a conditional purchase order in the queue, and each Prime member can hold up to 200 active requests at once, allowing them to not browse anymore (or at least less because you don't need to compare), they are building automated buying pipelines across dozens of products simultaneously, browsing less because comparison shopping becomes unnecessary when the system is already watching the price for them.
This creates a shift in search volume.
Since high-frequency products that buyers already know and repurchase regularly will start generating fewer searches, not because demand dropped, but because demand is now queued and no longer requires a search session to execute.
That reduction in search traffic opens a small but real window for newer or competing products to gain traction through ads, rank higher with less resistance, and build relevance in spaces that were previously dominated by established repeat-purchase volume. For those established products, inventory moves steadily without fighting for clicks, the risk is simply not being the offer someone locked in before the queue formed.
Note: Two details most sellers will overlook: this only works for FBA items, so if your inventory is not in Amazon's network, you do not exist in this flow at all. And promotional discounts and coupons do not apply to Auto Buy purchases, meaning your deal stack is irrelevant at execution.
The only thing that fires the order is your base price crossing the buyer's threshold.
Your listing content, images, and reviews are not present when the purchase fires. The decision already happened. Price is the only active variable at execution.
So this might be time to map your pricing floor as a demand activation point before you run any price event.
If Amazon surfaces data on how many Auto Buy rules are set on your ASIN and at what price points, that is real queued intent, and it belongs in your replenishment and promotional planning before you touch your price.
♻️ Repost if someone on your network runs promotions without knowing what demand is already queued.
