One thing I find interesting about industries like golf is how long products can remain relatively unchanged.
Take putters for example.
For years, most innovation centered around:
• alignment aids
• shape changes
• blade vs mallet styles
• slight weighting adjustments
But very few companies truly reinvented the experience itself.
That’s an important lesson for ecommerce sellers.
A lot of brands mistake cosmetic variation for actual innovation.
Changing:
• colors
• packaging
• small features
• visual design
…usually isn’t enough to create a meaningful moat long term.
The products that typically perform best are the ones solving a problem in a noticeably better way.
That’s one of the biggest questions I ask when evaluating Amazon opportunities:
“What meaningful outcome improves for the customer?”
Because true differentiation is rare.
And when you find it, pricing pressure, competition, and ad dependency usually become much easier to manage.
That’s a huge part of what we analyze with DataDive: https://lnkd.in/e2h4mCJ2
Do you think most ecommerce “innovation” today is actually just cosmetic differentiation?
