I audit dozens of Amazon PPC accounts every month. And I still see 7-figure sell

I audit dozens of Amazon PPC accounts every month. And I still see 7-figure sellers bleeding ad spend because they confuse two fundamental concepts.

Negative Keywords vs. Negative Targeting.

They sound the same. They both save you money. But they do completely different jobs. If you don't understand the difference, you are losing control of your ad placement.

Here is the exact difference—and how I use both to protect budget:

🛑 1. Negative Keywords (Filtering the Search Term)

The Goal: Blocking specific words or phrases that a customer types into the search bar.

In Practice: You sell a high-end, premium laptop. You add "cheap" or "used" as a negative keyword.

The Result: Your ad never triggers for bargain hunters. You kill irrelevant, low-intent clicks before they even happen.

🎯 2. Negative Targeting (Filtering the Placement)

The Goal: Blocking specific competitors, brands, or categories where your ad actually lives on Amazon.

In Practice: You sell luxury fashion accessories. You use negative targeting to block your ads from appearing directly on the product detail pages of budget, discount brands.

The Result: You control exactly where your ad physically shows up. You protect your brand image and stop wasting money on shoppers who are looking for a $5 alternative.

Negative Keywords dictate what the customer types. Negative Targeting dictates where your ad appears.

You need both to run a highly efficient, profitable Amazon PPC account.
