This year we significantly improved our parental leave policy Nectar. Although I’m now proud of the benefits we offer (whereas I was previously ashamed), I’m still not satisfied

For a long time, I wanted to offer better parental leave benefits, but we couldn’t afford it

It’s really tough on a small business to bear the costs when you’re just trying to survive and make payroll

I even felt guilty as as I became a father because I knew I had more flexibility as an owner of the company than we were able to offer our employees

Fortunately, we’ve hit a large enough scale where our business can sustain it financially and operationally

However, the real issue is that the United States is a first-world country, yet we have some of the worst parental leave benefits out of all first-world countries

New parents should have a substantial amount of time with their newborns, not to mention pregnancy loss, complications, adoption, medical issues leading up, etc.

Our taxes should go to fund universal parental leave benefits

A vast majority of the population of the United States agrees with this

Yet nothing changes even though this issue should transcend political divides

Yes, some states provide decent parental leave benefits, but not even half provide meaningful benefits

Instead, small businesses are forced to bear the burden, which often means little or no benefits

I’m not sure why this doesn’t change, but I will gladly back any candidate who will champion this cause
