Amazon has been betting on voice since 2014.

Alexa launched that year, now we are 12 years later, 600 million endpoints, it has become the most recognized AI brand in the home, and yet voice shopping never became the default. People used Alexa to set timers and play music, and went to the Amazon app to buy things.

So Amazon built Rufus, and the first complaint when it launched was exactly what you would expect: people did not want to type questions into a chat window while shopping.

That complaint was not fixed by making Rufus smarter. It was fixed by collapsing Rufus into Alexa and calling it "Alexa for Shopping."

But here is what that means in practice, if you already own an Echo device, the experience is genuinely different now.

Your conversations at home feed your shopping recommendations on your phone, and the two data streams share memory, so a preference you expressed out loud becomes a filter the next time you open the app.

If you do not own an Echo device, you can still type or speak in the App.

So after all, I don't think Amazon is solving the typing problem with AI, instead they are solving it with hardware adoption by betting on those customers who already have Alexa in their homes. The question is whether that installed base is large enough to change how the majority of shoppers discover products.

For reference on all this, Andrew Bell analyzed Amazon's patent for this integration time ago and predicted the merger before it happened, because we saw the patent was built by the same team behind Rufus, and the word used most throughout it was "attributes." Not keywords, not search terms ... Attributes, and that tells you what the underlying system is optimizing for.

For sellers, the immediate implication is that product discovery is splitting into two paths:

1️⃣ Shoppers with Alexa devices will increasingly encounter your ASIN through a system that pre-qualifies intent before they open the app.

2️⃣ Shoppers without those devices will still find you through traditional search, your catalog needs to perform in both systems simultaneously.

So, before the chaos, I am not saying keyword optimization is dead, it just stopped being the only game.

♻️ Repost it to someone managing a catalog right now.
