Glance readability is so basic, most brands don't know they need to test for it.

Glance readability is so basic, most brands don't know they need to test for it.

That's exactly why it's a competitive advantage.

Everyone admits that no one reads much online.

Often, because it's simply too hard because the text is too small.

90% of hero images fail glance readability on mobile.

Brand teams don't even realise because they assume "mobile optimised" means the same thing.

It doesn't.

Mobile optimised is about responsive sizing.

Mobile-ready is about being readable on mobile.

You need mobile-ready, glance-readable heroes. Tested. Proven.

"Glance-readability" is about whether shoppers can actually read your critical messages in the time they give you.

How much time?

400 milliseconds. A glance.

Tobii Eye-tracking research with my friend Jon Ward shows shoppers don't read on mobile - they visually scan.

They fixate on hero images for less than half a second before scrolling.

What can your brain digest in 400 milliseconds?

4 messages. That's it.

Which 4 messages matter most?

→ What brand?

→ What format/type?

→ Which variant?

→ What size/count?

The 4Ws. The basics shoppers need to confirm: "Is this what I want?"

Only if there's space do you add: "Why choose this one?"

Think about Google Maps.

Glance-readable by design ON MOBILE.

==========================

You process directions instantly so you don't miss a turn.

No squinting. No friction. Just clarity at speed. Life saving readability.

Your hero images should work the same way. Your conversion is at stake.

But most don't test for glance-readability.

Poor contrast. Tiny text. Too many messages competing for attention. The brand works in-store, but online as a thumbnail? Shoppers give up. They scroll past. They buy from someone who made it easier.

===================

Visual friction kills conversion.

===================

Optimising for attention is necessary but not sufficient. Shoppers need to glance-read on their device of choice - their phone - without the pain of deciphering unreadable text.

Make it easy to read. Make it easy to buy.
