Amazon got sued for something you've been living with.

California filed a lawsuit claiming Amazon pressures sellers to never list cheaper prices on other platforms. The penalty for doing so: losing the Buy Box, or getting suppressed entirely (no surprises here)

The pricing parity constraint is not new. It has been shaping multichannel strategy for years, what's new is that a state attorney general is now calling it anticompetitive behavior.

Because if Amazon detects a lower price elsewhere, your listing can lose the Buy Box without any notification or appeal queue, the algorithm just acts first and you have to investigate later when you see the impact.

And I think this is about structural control, because as of today Amazon's pricing logic govern your Amazon listing, reaches into your Shopify store, your wholesale pricing, and any promotional channel you run outside of Amazon.

What really sounds big on paper is that there are three mechanisms are described in the lawsuit.

🔵 Amazon pushes vendors to raise prices on competing platforms.

🔵 Makes products temporarily unavailable so competitors can match a higher price.

🔵 And pressures vendors to pull listings from lower-priced retailers entirely.

Brands building a DTC channel hit this constraint the moment they try to run independent promotions.

You want a Shopify flash sale at 15% off? If that goes below your Amazon price, you are accepting suppression risk + You have to keep in mind that some categories are more aggressive than others.

The other thing is that the system reacts faster than any seller can respond. So what can you do with this?

As of today, the only workaround is to map your pricing stack before you build your multichannel calendar, know which ASINs are at suppression risk before you launch any off-Amazon promotion.

Outside of that remember that this lawsuit does not change the rules today. It does confirm that regulators are studying the same constraint you have been navigating for years.

🩵 Tap like if this gave you a clearer picture of how Amazon's pricing logic actually works.

♻️ Repost this if you know a brand that is building DTC without having mapped this constraint yet.
