EN 301 549 is coming. Your PDPs are in the firing line.

Are your PDP gallery images compliant with the tech specs laid out in EN 301 549?

If you're doing business in the EU, this is the standard you need to follow.

EN 301 549 is the formal European Standard for digital accessibility.

It sets the requirements for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) - and that includes your secondary images.

WHY THIS MATTERS NOW

July 22nd 2026 is the target date for final publication of EN 301 549 v4.1.1.

My view is D-Day will be 1st August

How does EAA EN 301 549 work?

It grants a "Presumption of Conformity."

In plain English: if your assets meet EN 301 549, the EU legally assumes you're compliant with accessibility laws.

========================

But the burden is on YOU to prove it.

========================

Two criteria for digital commerce content. Both measurable:

✅ Minimum text size (2.4mm x-height)

✅ Minimum contrast (WCAG standards)

If your text on PDP Gallery images doesn't meet both, it fails. Simple as that.

WHO'S AT RISK

===========

If you're an EU-based business, you should have updated your compliance statement already (by June 2025).

If you haven't, you're technically already exposed but because the technical standards haven't been issued - things have been quiet but that's about to change.

Retailers could take down secondary images that haven't been proven compliant.

Target did this in the USA and removed all secondary images with text we've seen this happen before.

French retailers are already facing litigation under EAA.

THE GOOD NEWS

============

You can test now.

RHINO AI was designed to test PDP gallery images and media banners at scale and speed.

✅ WCAG contrast testing (both APCA and WCAG 2.1)

✅ Text size validation

✅ One image per second

If your images pass RHINO at AAA level, they meet EN 301 549 requirements.

Don't wait for enforcement. Prove compliance now.
