Running only exact match campaigns is like fishing with one hook in the middle of the ocean

Technically possible

Wildly inefficient

Exact match alone will never show the full picture of what converts in a category

Broad and phrase match exist to surface search terms

that would never be found by manually guessing keywords

The architecture matters more than the bids

Auto campaigns are the intelligence layer

They run at controlled spend

collect real buyer search data, and feed the rest of the structure

Phrase match is the expansion layer

It captures variations of proven terms

reaches more buyers

and filters out waste through weekly negation

Exact match is the margin protection layer

Maximum bid control on terms already proven to convert

This is where efficiency lives

The flow between layers is the strategy

Winning search terms move down from auto into phrase

then into exact as confidence builds

Irrelevant terms get negated upward

so budget stops leaking at every level

Skipping any layer does not simplify the account

It creates blind spots that compound

into wasted spend over time

Architecture wins

Aggression without structure just burns budget faster
