Your design framework is solid. Your design thinking is backwards.
"Don't roll the dice on your digital pack design"
Clients ask me if their new pack design will work online.

Wrong Question.

If you start by designing only for the physical shelf, you miss the most influential shelf: the digital shelf.
More traffic. Upstream influence before shoppers even step inside a store. And this shelf is on a mobile screen.
So why is your online pack the afterthought?
Constraints are beautiful. They force radical clarity.
When you move from a physical shelf with depth, lighting, and tactile presence to a 20mm thumbnail on a backlit screen, you aren't shrinking an image.
You're distilling your product to its purest essence.
No frills. No extraneous details.
On a shelf, "busy" can look "premium."
On a mobile screen, "busy" = noise and visual friction.
In-store, shoppers dwell for 5-7 seconds.
On mobile, they fixate on your hero for 400 milliseconds or LESS.
17x less consideration time means much higher stakes.
Most brands design and test for in-store only.
Their leadership team only do "instore visits"
They never "Walk the Store Online - ON THEIR MOBILES"
Then wonder why they under-index online.
They forgot to design for the shelf, driving almost ALL of their growth.
Product Discovery starts online now.
The Digital Shelf on Mobile has a thin vertical strip of images.
Glance-readable Hero Images Matter Most Now.
From TikTok to Target. From Search to Sparky.
From Ratings & Reviews to Rufus AI.
If you're using the DICED framework for pack design, keep it. It's solid.
But start your design journey for digital AT THE SAME TIME you design for shelf.
In parallel. Not a bolt-on afterthought.
What needs to be true for your design to win on a 20mm thumbnail?
Start there. Your future depends on Digital Discovery.
