I've optimized 14,000 hero images on Amazon.
Here's the one thing 90% of them get wrong.
They look good.
That's it.
⤷ That's the problem.
Sellers spend $500-2,000 on a hero image that looks professional. Clean background. Sharp product shot. Proper lighting.
And it converts exactly the same as the image they replaced.
Because looking good is table stakes.
Your competition also looks good.
Every product on page one of Amazon looks good.
What separates a hero image that gets a 0.2% CTR from one that gets 0.8% CTR isn't quality.
It's disruption.
I call it the 3-second rule.
When someone scrolls Amazon search results on their phone, your hero image has roughly 3 seconds to do one of these things:
→ Break the visual pattern of the page
→ Make the shopper's brain pause on YOUR product
→ Communicate ONE specific thing that nobody else on the page communicates
Most hero images fail all three.
They blend in.
They look like every other product in the category.
They're well-lit, well-shot, and completely invisible.
The images that win?
They do something unexpected.
An angle nobody else uses.
A scale comparison that makes the product feel different.
A color treatment that pops against the search results page.
Not gimmicky. Not misleading.
Just different enough that the brain stops scrolling.
I've audited listings across every major Amazon category.
The pattern is the same everywhere.
The hero images with the highest CTR aren't the prettiest ones.
⤷ They're the ones you can't ignore.
When was the last time you looked at your hero image next to your top 5 competitors on a phone screen?
