5 GTM secrets that separate the seniors from the juniors.

1. Naming Conventions are a Weapon: Don't name a tag "FB Pixel." Use Platform - Category - Action (e.g., Meta - Lead - Contact Form).

2. CSS Selectors > Click Text: Juniors track "Click Text." Seniors use CSS selectors because text changes, but IDs are (usually) forever.

3. The 'Initialization' Trap: Never use a Data Layer variable before the dataLayer.push has actually occurred. It returns undefined every time.

4. Audit the Hardcoded Code: If you move to GTM, delete the old hardcoded snippets immediately. Double-tagging is how you end up with 200% conversion rates.

5. In 2026, if you aren't moving mission-critical tags (GA4, Meta) to server-side GTM, you're losing 20-30% of your data to ad-blockers.

P.S Always verify your setup in GA4 Debug View after checking GTM Preview. Seeing the event actually hit the server is the only way to be 100% sure.

Which of these did you have to learn the hard way?
